Having a last breakfast on the outdoor deck of the ship with views of Barcelona made me feel so excited... I wanted to start exploring the city!
After going through customs, we took a taxi to 'La Rambla" which is a famous boulevard in Barcelona. We didn't have any hotel reservations so this was a good place to sit down in one of the many outdoor cafes that provide Wifi.
Hotel Tonight is an App we like to use to find good deals on line, you can usually find discounts up to 50% off or even more!
Our goal was to find a short rental apartment so we decided to stay in a hotel for a couple of days. We had a hard time finding where to stay, the city was having a formula one race on the weekend so the options were very limited and super expensive.
We found a nice hotel outside of the touristic area in a more local neighborhood, which we loved. The guy at the front desk gave us advice about places to visit but he also said that it was going to be a very crazy weekend because of the race. He also mentioned the city of Sitges, which is a town by the ocean, about 30 minutes by train, that locals escape to relax. This sounded good to our ears so we decided to spend the weekend there. Sitges is a lovely coastal town that has great beaches and excellent tourist facilities. The city which overlooks the Mediterranean has large avenues, narrow streets, four museums and the gorgeous beaches of Costa Dorada/Golden Coast.
You can have a nice stroll on the boardwalk and stop at one of the many restaurants to cool down having the amazing view of the Mediterranean sea.
What we liked about this charming place is the open minded community. There is a nice mix of straight and gay people living here and visiting from all over the world, which made us feel welcome and very comfortable.
Nudity in this place is not taboo, there is a nude beach where families, straights and gays like to go and enjoy the sunshine. I have to say that I felt so comfortable that it was my first time having the experience of being nude around so many people without feeling shame or any discomfort.
We loved this town that we decided to rent an apartment for about two weeks, and took the train to go explore Barcelona. This was a great decision because after spending hectic days in the big city, we had a peaceful place to go back to relax.
We stayed at Hotel Montserrat, a cute place right in downtown, they serve a complimentary delicious breakfast and the staff is very friendly. Montserrat, the owner, is a lovely lady that also owns rental apartments one block from the hotel. When we decided to stay for two weeks, she gave us a good deal with one of the studios that included the daily breakfast (Not usually included with rentals).
If you ever go to Sitges, I highly recommend this hotel... Check the website at http://hotelmontserrat.e.telefonica.net/index.html
Exploring Barcelona was a dream come true... The city has so many historical sites, parks, museums, amazing architecture and experiencing the culture was a big plus for us.
The best way to get around the city and be able to go to all the sites is by taking a tour bus. The ticket is good for a whole day and buses run in a circle, stopping at each of the attractions. You have plenty of time to explore each of these places. Make sure to bring water, some snacks and comfortable shoes because there is a lot of walking.
We had a great time in Spain, but after two weeks it was time to keep on going with our adventure... To be continue.
